Brachypelma smithi "Mexican Red-Knee" When most people think of tarantulas, one of the first thing that pops into their minds is Brachypelma smithi. This hobby classic, native to Mexico, is a favorite among many hobbyists and is a good beginner's species. Due to prior over-collection, this species is listed on the CITES list and is not legally available for import as WC adults any longer. While not as readily and cheaply available as in the past, this species is being captive-bred on a frequent basis and is not hard to find as spiderlings and juveniles from online dealers. Due to the slow growth rate and long life span, adult females can be expensive (many sell for up to $200). This species does very well in captivity on dry substrate, a water dish, and a hide. No special heating or humidity requirements unless your home is unusually cold in the winter. Females can be expected to live in excess of 20 years.
